Facing a dense urban landscape, the South Yarra Residence is a new home with an inward orientation. The structure of the building made from concrete with a second skin of limestone. Throughout the building there is an interaction between these two materials that is both subtle and strong. Both light in colour and distinct in texture, the differentiation in the materiality is revealed by the movement of natural light that penetrates in key junctures. The strong architectural language and revealed structure is used throughout the interiors to create a balanced composition. A commercial kitchen at the centre of the house is covered with a continuous skylight overhead and skylights through the surrounding grounds bring light to the basement level.
